See beyond the surface—Konecranes RopeQ Magnetic Rope Inspection

In demanding industries like automotive, paper, and steel, every component matters—and crane wire ropes are no exception. Yet only 20% of a crane wire rope’s condition is visible. The remaining 80% could be hiding wear, corrosion, or critical damage that puts your people, processes, and productivity at risk.

At Konecranes, safety is never a coincidence—it’s engineered into everything we do. Konecranes RopeQ Magnetic Rope Inspection assesses the condition of your crane wire ropes, including the core and inner wires that are not readily visible. It utilizes magnetic-inductive technology to provide accurate data on both the interior and exterior condition of the rope.

With deeper insights, you can optimize your maintenance decisions, extend equipment lifetime, and keep your operations moving—safely and efficiently.

Don't let hidden issues disrupt your operations

How is the RopeQ inspection done?

Would you rather have 2 hours of planned downtime than 2 weeks of unplanned downtime? A typical RopeQ inspection takes around 2 hours per wire rope hoist. The inspection is always done by a Konecranes Field Service Specialist.

Before inspection

Before the inspection starts, obligatory safety measures are implemented, including standard operating procedures for the work area. Once everything is safe, the crane is prepared for measurement by the Konecranes Field Service Specialist.

During inspection

During the inspection, the ropes are measured with RopeQ one by one, and the results can be read from the operating device screen in real-time. When the measurement is completed, RopeQ equipment is detached, and the inspection continues with visual inspection of the relevant components. All the findings are documented with photos.

After inspection

Once everything is inspected, the crane is returned to operation. You are notified on-site if any safety findings or significant damage were found. The RopeQ report is usually delivered within a day after the inspection.

How can RopeQ inspection benefit you?

  • Improved safety: Detects internal wire breaks, corrosion, and wear using magnetic-inductive technology.
  • Optimized maintenance: Enables rope replacement based on actual condition, not just time or cycles. You receive an easy-to-read report with actionable recommendations.
  • Extended lifespan of crane wire ropes: Optimized change intervals to reduce waste and cost.
  • Reliable performance: Delivers consistent and dependable results.
  • Stay compliant with confidence: Helps in meeting legal requirements for equipment that is used infrequently or has been idle.

You receive not only a report but also expert consultation

The RopeQ report is delivered to you with a consultation about the findings and conclusions and is available on Konecranes Portal. We give you recommendations on what to do next. The report is usually delivered within a day after the inspection, either directly to the customer via email or on-site if significant damages are found.

The RopeQ report includes:

  • Results from the measurement with graphs.
  • Findings from the visual inspection with photos.
  • Conclusion whether the rope can be used or if it shall be replaced.

What our customers say about RopeQ inspection?

"We found the Konecranes RopeQ inspection very valuable. This was a cost-effective way for us to evaluate the condition of the cables. It is impossible to do a thorough inspection any other way. We were pleased with the report we received and felt it had a lot of value. The goal of seeking information is to make good decisions. This report filled that void for us."
